Let Them Fall: Building True Resilience In Children

In today’s fast-paced world, we often hear that children are not as resilient as they
once were. As an educator, I believe this is not because children are weaker – it is
because the environment we are creating for them leaves little room for growth
through struggle. Out of love, many parents are overprotective, shielding children
from every discomfort, every challenge, every fall.
I witnessed a moment recently that stayed with me. During a school sports event, a
young boy tripped and fell during a race. Tears welled up in his eyes, but before he
could decide what to do, his parent rushed to the ground, picked him up, and said,
“It’s okay, you don’t have to run anymore.” The boy, who was initially ready to stand
up and try again, now clung to his parent and quietly sat out.
Just minutes later, another child fell during the same race. This time, her parent
called out from the stands, “Get up! You can do it!” The child got back on her feet,
dusted off her knees, and ran the rest of the race to loud applause. She didn’t win
first place, but she won something far greater — the courage to keep going despite
the fall.
Resilience is built in these very moments. It is not about never falling; it is about
learning to rise. When we hover too closely and remove every obstacle, we deny
children the chance to develop grit, problem-solving skills, and confidence.
As parents and educators, our role is to guide, not to control; to support, not to
shelter. Let us step back just enough for children to face challenges, make mistakes,
and discover their inner strength. These small struggles prepare them for life’s bigger
battles — and the pride they feel in overcoming them is a gift that lasts forever.
The best thing we can do for our children is not to smooth every road, but to walk
beside them while they learn to navigate the bumps. After all, the world will not
always be kind — but we can raise children who are strong enough to face it.
Let us nurture courage, not fear, and raise a generation ready to rise after every fall.
