Education has traditionally focused on knowledge, information and

qualifications. While these are important, we must ask ourselves a simple

question, what truly stays with a student throughout life?

Much of the information we learn today may not be used tomorrow.

Technology changes rapidly, industries evolve and the future of
employment remains uncertain. What is relevant today may become
outdated tomorrow. However, one thing has remained valuable across
generations and throughout human history, the qualities we develop and
the values we practice.

The 21st Century Skills expected from students such as critical thinking,
adaptability, digital literacy, leadership and problem solving are essential
for success in a rapidly changing world. Along with these skills, human
values such as respect, integrity, compassion, empathy and service
continue to remain timeless. Together, these qualities and values shape

character.

Schools already nurture these attributes through academics, sports, arts,
clubs, leadership opportunities and community engagement programmes.

The challenge is not the absence of such efforts, the challenge is to
organise them within a clear framework. Every activity should be linked to

defined skills, qualities and values so that schools can understand what is

already being developed and what still needs greater focus.

This is where dedicated research and development teams within schools
becomes important. Activities should be continuously reviewed, improved
and aligned to the desired student outcomes through a simple cycle –
Envision, Plan, Execute, Review and Innovate.

Values such as respect, integrity, compassion, empathy and service are
best developed through experience. Service projects, community outreach
programmes and meaningful engagement with society help students
understand real world challenges and develop a sense of responsibility

towards others.

That perhaps is the true purpose of education.
